Vinyl Storage in a Loft Dormer
Thinking on Our Fee
A recent project took us into a tight loft dormer space where the client wanted a bespoke vinyl record storage unit. With hundreds of records to house and a clear vision in mind, they provided dimensions for a modular shelving system tailored to their collection.
The space was compact, with sloping ceilings and limited clearance — but we were confident we could make it work. We designed a clean, functional layout that would maximise storage without overwhelming the room.
Once installation began, a small but crucial detail emerged: the internal shelf height wasn’t quite enough for standard vinyl sleeves. It was a tight squeeze, and the records simply wouldn’t fit. The client was understandably concerned, and we knew we had to act fast.
Rather than scrap the build, we adapted on-site by adjusting the shelf spacing. No need to alter the face panels or overall layout — just a smart rework of the internals to make the unit vinyl-friendly. The fix was subtle but effective, and every record now slides in with ease.
Another challenge was the cornering. The design required two units to meet cleanly in a tight corner, with angled walls and uneven surfaces. Getting the alignment right took careful measuring and a bit of creative joinery, but the final result is seamless — the two units now read as one continuous piece.
This kind of challenge is exactly why we love bespoke work. It’s not just about building to spec — it’s about solving problems, staying flexible, and making sure the final result works beautifully in real life.
